Focus on Literacy
Congratulations to Monta Thomas of Indian Hills Middle School. She is the first social studies teacher to become HYPE certified.
Jeninne Banks, and Rebecca Washburn of Indian Hills and Mount Jordan Middle Schools respectively, will also become certified soon and will be eligible to attend the HYPE certification reception in May.
They will all receive cactus credit along with a $300 stipend to go along with their official certificate. WELL DONE.
HYPE stands for High Yielding Practices for Educators and is a eleven course certification that focuses on highly effective evidence-based practices for teachers. It emphasizes writing with evidence and support, comprehension through differentiation and practice, and student engagement through inquiry and support.
Below is the HYPE flyer for this school year. It is not too late to start to become HYPE certified. There are several classes left this year and this program will continue next year. Not all classes need to be taken in the same school year.

Events Around The District
Alta High School
Alta hosted Dr. Randy Roberts from Purdue University for a AP review seminar on Saturday, April 14. Topics covered included Vietnam, World War II, and Civil Rights.
Dr Roberts is the author or co-author of 17 books, has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times, and has appeared on, or been the consultant on numerous TV shows and documentaries. What an awesome opportunity for students.
Midvale Middle School
For the third consecutive year, Midvale Middle School eighth-grader Anthony Cheng has won the state National Geographic Bee championship. Cheng will compete in the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. May 22 - 25. Last year, Cheng placed fifth in the national competition.
The state bee was held at Thanksgiving Point on Friday, March 30; check out the coverage in The Salt Lake TribuneFox 13 News.
Butler Middle School
The Butler Middle School 9th graders recently had the opportunity to go on a field trip to 5 different places of worship, one for each of the 5 major world religions. They started by going to the Hindu temple in South Jordan, then the Buddhist temple downtown, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox cathedral, the Muslim mosque in West Valley, and then finished with the Jewish synagogue in Milcreek. The students spent about 30 minutes at each location learning the basics from the local religious leader. There was time for questions and answers and then a few minutes walking around and taking pictures of each holy site. During the field trip the students had many unique experiences that helped them understand the different religions and expand their cultural awareness in our community. Among the many wonderful things they were able to do and see was a hand-written Torah costing $100,000. Overall it was a fantastic experience that the students will not soon forget.
